Turkish coffee is more than just a drink — it’s a centuries-old ritual that brings people together. Often called a conversation starter, it has long played a role in strengthening social bonds. As the Turkish saying goes, “A cup of coffee is remembered for forty years.”
Meet your guide at Beta Han, a beautifully restored Ottoman inn located in the heart of Istanbul's bustling Eminönü district. It was just next to the Spice Bazaar (Mısır Çarşısı), where it was at the crossroads for the spice trade from India to Europe. Beta Han, like many Hans in this district, would have been a vital part of this bustling trade network, providing lodging for merchants and a secure place for their precious cargo.
Once known by various names such as Tahmis Han and Hasırcılar Han, this historical building now serves as a serene cultural hub, seamlessly blending centuries-old architecture with modern elegance.
As you step inside from the narrow, lively streets, you'll be welcomed by a peaceful courtyard, warm hospitality, and a coffee museum. Recently renovated by Beta Gıda with great care to preserve its original character, the han offers a relaxing escape from the city's chaos.
Begin with a guided introduction to Turkish coffee culture and its deep roots in daily life. You’ll also explore authentic Turkish furnaces — a unique highlight of this experience — used for grinding and preparing coffee the traditional way.
Then, witness the brewing process over kahve kumu (heated sand) and learn how this technique brings out the rich flavor and signature foam of Turkish coffee.
Enjoy your freshly brewed cup in a bright, welcoming atmosphere, and chat with our local guide to discover insider tips about Istanbul and Turkish daily life.
